As summer approaches, one of the most eagerly awaited events in Japan is the Pool Opening. This celebration usually takes place in early June and marks the official start of the swimming season. Especially for children and families, it is a joyful and exciting time, deeply rooted in Japan’s educational system and local culture—an important event that symbolizes the beginning of summer.
What is Pool Opening?
This ceremonial event is held at schools and community pools across Japan. Students, teachers, and locals gather to celebrate with games like relays and water polo.
It serves as a wonderful opportunity for social interaction and strengthening community bonds.
Pool Life in Japanese Schools
In summer PE classes, swimming is commonly taught in elementary schools.
Many schools have outdoor pools where children can enjoy learning how to swim. Moments such as seeing frogs lay eggs in pools left unused during winter, or watching tadpoles swim in algae-covered water, help children connect with nature. Cleaning the pool together before the opening is also part of the learning process—teaching teamwork and shared responsibility.

In Japan, swimming is a vital life skill in a nation surrounded by water. Families often visit the beach in summer, so swimming lessons help prevent accidents and add to the joy of the season.

Japan’s cold (Oyashio) and warm (Kuroshio) currents create varied regional climates. Northern areas like Hokkaido stay cooler, while southern ones like Okinawa are warmer. So, Pool Openings happen as early as May in Okinawa and as late as July in Hokkaido.
Summer Memories for Japanese Children
Playing in rivers or the ocean, and enjoying games like suika-wari—where blindfolded kids try to crack a watermelon—create cherished summer memories.
Vancouver Island, much like Japan, is surrounded by the sea and rich in beautiful nature such as mountains and rivers, so there may be similarities in how we enjoy the summer.

夏が近づくと、日本で待ち望まれるイベントの一つが「プール開き」です。このお祝いは、通常6月の初めに行われ、泳ぎの季節の公式な始まりを告げます。特に子どもたちや家族にとって、楽しさと喜びに満ちた時間であり、日本の教育や地域文化と深く結びついており、夏の始まりを象徴する重要なイベントとなっています。
プール開きとは？
プール開きは、日本の学校や地域のプールで行われる儀式的なイベントです。この日は、学生、教師、地域の人々が集まり、プールのオープンを祝います。。この日はリレー競技や水球など、さまざまなゲームやアクティビティで溢れ、子どもたちは自分のスキルを披露しつつ、プールでの環境を楽しみます。社会的な交流や地域の絆を深める素晴らしい機会です。
日本の学校でのプール事情
日本の小学校では、夏に体育の授業で水泳を教えることが一般的です。屋外にプールがある学校も多く、子どもたちはそこで楽しく水泳を学びます。冬の間使わなかったプールにカエルが産卵をしておたまじゃくしが泳ぐのを見たり、藻で一面が緑色になるプールを見るのも自然を感じられる瞬間であり、プール開きの前にみんなで協力してプールの清掃をするのも共同作業を学ぶ一環ともなっています。

海や川で遊んで、スイカ割り/子どもが目隠しをしてスイカをわるゲームをすることは日本の子供たちにとって楽しい夏休みと、家族の思い出となる素晴らしい季節です。
バンクーバーアイランドは日本と同じように司法を海に囲まれており、山や川など美しい自然が豊かな場所ですので夏の楽しみ方も共通するものがあるかもしれませんね。
